Common Questions

Self Assessment for sole traders — answered.

Do I need to complete a self assessment as a sole trader?
Yes. If you are self employed and earning more than £1,000 in a tax year you are required to register for self assessment and file a return with HMRC. You must also register if you have other untaxed income, including rental income, savings interest or dividends above the relevant thresholds.
What expenses can I claim as a sole trader?
Allowable expenses include tools and equipment, vehicle costs (mileage or actual costs), materials, work clothing, professional subscriptions, phone and broadband, advertising, accountancy fees and a proportion of home office costs if you work from home. We review every expense category with you to make sure nothing is missed.
What do I need to provide to get my return done?
We will need a summary of your income for the tax year, records of your business expenses, details of any other income sources (rental, employment, savings) and your Unique Taxpayer Reference. We send you a simple checklist so you know exactly what to pull together.
I am based in Farnborough or Aldershot — do you work locally?
We are based in Fleet and work with sole traders across Fleet, Farnborough, Aldershot and the wider Hampshire and Surrey area, as well as remotely throughout the UK. Everything is handled online so there is no need to come into an office.
How much does self assessment cost?
Our self assessment pricing starts from £153 for employed individuals with additional income, rising to £255 for self employed sole traders and £383 for those with multiple or complex income sources. Use our package builder for an instant quote.
What happens if I miss the January deadline?
HMRC issues an automatic £100 penalty for late filing, even if you have no tax to pay. Further penalties apply at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months. Interest is also charged on any tax paid late. We work well ahead of the deadline so this never becomes an issue for our clients.
